His Eye is on the Sparrow
The daily prayers I posted on social media last Friday—Sunday were comprised of lyrics from the hymn Civilla D. Martin wrote, His Eye is on the Sparrow.
A couple of Scripture passages come to mind when I think about this hymn.
The steps of a man are established by the Lord, when he delights in his way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the Lord upholds his hand. (Psalm 37:24-25 ESV).
Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows (Matthew 10:29-31 ESV).
When the trials and struggles come into our lives, we can rest in the knowledge that because God cares the small sparrow, He must certainly care for us!
This hymn is a statement of our faith in Christ’s sustaining work in our lives and a reminder that we are to remain His faithful followers. Join me in singing this prayer:
Why should I feel discouraged? Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart be lonely and long for heaven and home,
when Jesus is my portion?
My constant friend is he: his eye is on the sparrow,
and I know he watches me;
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Refrain:
I sing because I’m happy, I sing because I’m free,
for his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
“Let not your heart be troubled,” his tender word I hear,
and resting on his goodness, I lose my doubts and fears;
though by the path he leadeth but one step I may see:
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Whenever I am tempted, whenever clouds arise,
when song gives place to sighing, when hope within me dies,
I draw the closer to him; from care he sets me free:
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me;
his eye is on the sparrow, and I know he watches me.
Thank God that He is our portion and constant friend.
