From Bethlehem to Glory: An Advent Series
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. – Philippians 1:6

Advent has led us step by step from longing to fulfillment, from prophecy to promise, from Bethlehem’s cradle to the glory that awaits. We have watched the candles burn—hope, peace, joy, and love—each flame revealing more of the heart of God and more of the story we are invited to live.
But Advent does not end with the final candle. It sends us forward.
The season may close, but its light is meant to continue burning in us. Christ has come, Christ is with us, and Christ will come again. The journey from Bethlehem to glory is not a path we merely remember; it is a path we walk.
Beyond the Waiting
Advent trains our hearts to wait with expectation. Now, as we step into a new year, that posture remains. We carry with us a watchfulness that looks for Christ’s presence in ordinary days, in quiet moments, in unexpected places. The God who entered the world in a manger still enters our lives with grace that surprises and sustains.
Beyond the Flames
The flames of Advent were never meant to stay on the wreath. They were meant to be carried, to be reflected in our words, our choices, our compassion, our courage. Hope becomes the way we speak life into weary places. Peace becomes the way we stand firm in a fractured world. Joy becomes the strength that steadies us. Love becomes the flame that warms every corner of our lives.
Christ’s light is not seasonal. It is eternal, and it is entrusted to us.
Beyond Bethlehem
The Child in the manger grew into the Savior who conquered death and opened the way to glory. Advent reminds us of His first coming, but it also awakens us to His presence now and His return to come. We live between the already and the not yet, with our hearts anchored in His promises and lives shaped by His kingdom.
As we move beyond Advent, we do not leave the story behind. We step deeper into it.
O Jesus, I Have Promised
John Ernest Bode wrote O Jesus, I Have Promised, a hymn that expresses the heart of lifelong discipleship. This makes it a beautiful companion as we move beyond Advent, because it shifts our posture from waiting to walking, from the glow of the flames to the daily journey of following Christ.
O Jesus, I have promised
To serve Thee to the end;
Be Thou forever near me,
My Master and my Friend.
Christ goes before us, Christ walks with us, and we follow Him into the ordinary days that lie beyond the holy season.
Later, in the hymn we pray:
O let me feel Thee near me;
The world is ever near.
This is the language of watchfulness: of living awake, attentive, and faithful. It mirrors the call of Advent to stay alert for Christ’s presence and to walk in His light even when the world presses close.
This is a discipleship hymn. It is the natural next step after Advent: a commitment to follow the One who came, who comes, and who will come again.
A Call for the Year Ahead
So, as the calendar turns and a new year unfolds, carry the light you’ve received. Let Christ’s hope steady you. Let His peace guard you. Let His joy strengthen you. Let His love transform you.
Walk into the year with:
- Watchful hearts attentive to God’s movement and awakened to His voice.
- Faithful lives rooted in His Word, and responsive to His Spirit.
- Steadfast courage trusting that the One who came is the One who leads.
The journey continues, and Christ goes before us.
Prayer
Father, as we move beyond Advent, keep our hearts anchored in the light of Christ. Let the hope, peace, joy, and love we have reflected on become the rhythm of our days. Teach us to walk faithfully, watchfully, and courageously into the year ahead. May Your light shine through us, guiding our steps and blessing those we encounter. Lead us from Bethlehem toward the glory You have prepared. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
