I’m Grateful for the Women in My Life

Since today is International Women’s Day, I wanted to add a little different “spin” on the day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women.

Today, I am thanking God and celebrating the women whom He has placed in my life at various times.

I am often reminded of how blessed and honored I am to have had Jeannie Crowder as my mom. She was loving, generous, kind, spunky, and loved to laugh—often at very inappropriate times. Most importantly, she taught and modeled for me— and countless women on several continents—how to love God and others. She loved Jesus and wanted to make sure that everyone with whom she came in contact knew Him as their Savior and Lord. Much like my mom, my sister, Anne Lucas, is loving, generous, kind, spunky, and she also has a passion to share the Good News with people all over the world.

I am grateful to be among the special group of Nigeria Missionary Kids whose missionary aunts and cousins, as well as Nigerian aunts, modeled strength, love, kindness, grace, and patience that comes through a consistent relationship with and strong reliance upon Jesus.

There have been so many other women—family, teachers, co-workers, friends, and other sisters in Christ who have loved and encouraged me throughout my life.

These precious Christ-following women have been Spiritual Mothers to me at various times as they have modeled how to look through the lens of Scripture to determine what God’s Word says about how we view people, relationships, issues, circumstances, and events.

A Spiritual Mother is a female Christ-follower who is obedient to follow Christ’s command in Matthew 28:18-20, The Great Commission. Through the years I have come to understand this command to mean that through His position of authority, Jesus gave a command to all Christ-followers that He empowers us, through the Holy Spirit, to accomplish. He said to make disciple-makers as we go about doing the things He has called us to do in the places He has called us to do them. Titus 2 talks about the “older” women teaching the “younger” women.

Help me thank the Lord for all the Christ-following women who have loved God and me enough to teach me how to live out the gospel each day in my thoughts, words, and deeds.

Remembering God’s faithful provision in my life fuels my passion to know and live out God’s Word by coming alongside other women in disciple-making relationships.
