The daily prayers I posted on social media Monday—Thursday of this week were comprised of lyrics from the hymn Ray Palmer wrote, My Faith Looks Up To Thee.
Several Scripture passages come to mind when I think about this hymn.
In Isaiah 4:22, God says, “Turn to me and be saved, all the ends of the earth! For I am God, and there is no other.”
Second Corinthians 5:6-7 says, So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.
Hebrews 12:1-2 says, Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.
Regardless of the situation in which we find ourselves, in faith we look up to Jesus. In this hymn we look to Jesus in awe, amazement, thankfulness, trust, and humility as we remember His mercies that purchased our salvation, and His grace and guidance throughout our lives.
This hymn is a statement of our faith in Christ and a prayer that we would remain His faithful followers. Join me in singing this prayer:
My faith looks up to Thee,
Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Savior divine!
Now hear me while I pray,
Take all my guilt away,
Oh, let me from this day
Be wholly Thine!
May Thy rich grace impart
Strength to my fainting heart,
My zeal inspire!
As Thou hast died for me,
Oh, may my love to Thee
Pure, warm, and changeless be,
A living fire!
While life’s dark maze I tread,
And griefs around me spread,
Be Thou my guide;
Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away,
Nor let me ever stray
From Thee aside.
When ends life’s transient dream,
When death’s cold, sullen stream
Shall o’er me roll;
Blest Savior, then in love,
Fear and distrust remove;
Oh, bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul!
Ask God to help you walk by faith and not by sight.
