The Fifth Candle of Advent: Christ is the Savior Born

The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. – John 1:14

The fifth flame of Advent is Christ Himself, the Light who has come into the world. All the waiting, all the longing, all the promises converge in this moment: God has drawn near. The eternal Word, present before time began, has stepped into human history. He did not send a messenger or a symbol. He came Himself.

John’s Gospel does not begin with shepherds or angels, but with eternity. The One who spoke creation into being now takes on flesh. The God whom no one could see now becomes visible, touchable, and knowable. Advent culminates in this miracle: God dwelling with us.

Christ’s birth is not simply a holy night in Bethlehem. It is the unveiling of God’s glory in humanity. It is the infinite wrapped in the finite It is divine majesty laid in a manger. The fifth flame burns with the brilliance of this truth: Christ the Savior is born!

Silent Night

Franz Xaver Gruber composed the tune and Joseph Mohr wrote the lyrics that paints a picture capturing the wonder of the birth of Jesus. Its beautiful melody and simple lyrics invite us to kneel beside the manger and behold the mystery of God’s love made flesh.

Silent night, holy night!
All is calm, all is bright
Round yon virgin mother and Child.
Holy Infant, so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace,
Sleep in heavenly peace.

SilenSilent night, holy night!
Shepherds quake at the sight;
Glories stream from heaven afar,
Heav’nly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

“Christ the Savior is born” are lyrics that carry the weight of heaven’s joy. The Savior has come, not in power but in peace. Not with armies, but with angels. Not in a palace, but in a stable. The world slept, unaware that salvation had arrived in the quietest of ways.

They hymn invite us into that stillness. Into the holy hush where God’s glory shines through the ordinary. Into the peace that settles over weary hearts when they encounter the newborn King.

When we sing Silent Night, we join the shepherds in wonder, the angels in praise, and the world in receiving the gift of God’s Son.

Flame Imagery

The fifth flame of Advent is the flame of Christ, the Light of the World. It is the brightest flame, not because it outshines the others, but because it fulfills them. Hope, peace, joy, and love, all find their meaning in Him.

This flame does not flicker with uncertainty. It burns with the steady brilliance of God’s faithfulness. It is the light that darkness cannot overcome. It is the radiance of God’s glory wrapped in human flesh.

Lighting the Christ candle is a declaration: The Savior has come. The Light has dawned. God (Immanuel) is with us.

Each glow of this flame reminds us that Christ enters our world not only once in Bethlehem, but again and again as he enters our fears, our questions, our longing, and our need. His presence is the light that guides us, warms us, and leads us home.

Carrying the Flame

As Christmas dawns, reflect on what it means that Christ has come for you.

Where do you need HIs light to shine?

Into a place shadowed by fear.
Into a season marked by uncertainty.
Into a heart longing for renewal.
Into relationships needing grace.
Into the ordinary moments where you long to sense His nearness.

Let the flame of Christ illuminate every corner of your life. Let HIs presence bring clarity where there is confusion, warmth where there is coldness, and hope where there is despair.

Christ the Savior is not only born, He is present. He is reigning. He is redeeming. And He is coming again.

The Flame’s Testimony

The fifth flame proclaims the heart of Christmas:
Christ has come. Christ is here. Christ will come again.

This is a light that darkness cannot overcome. This is a glory that fills our waiting with wonder. This is the Savior who leads us from Bethlehem to glory.

Prayer

Father, thank You for the gift of Your Son, the Light of the World. As we light the Christ candle, fill our hearts with awe at the mystery of the Word made flesh. Let the presence of Jesus shine in our lives, driving out darkness and filling us with hope. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
