Teach Me, O Lord, the Perfect Way

The daily prayers I posted on social media last Tuesday—Sunday were comprised of lyrics from the hymn, Teach Me, O Lord, the Perfect Way, from the Scottish Psalter and Paraphrases.

Psalm 119:25-27 is a great introduction to this hymn.
My soul clings to the dust; give me life according to your word! When I told of my ways, you answered me; teach me your statutes! Make me understand the way of your precepts, and I will meditate on your wondrous works (ESV).

As Christ-followers, we need to ask God to give us a passion to know Him better through His Word. We can read God’s Word, but without the work of the Holy Spirit to interpret and apply that Word to our hearts, we will not understand what we have read.

This hymn is a paraphrase of Psalm 119:33-39. Join me in singing this prayer:

Teach me, O Lord, the perfect way
of thy precepts divine,
And to observe it to the end
I shall my heart incline. (verse 33)

Give understanding unto me,
so keep thy law shall I;
Yea, ev’n with my whole heart I shall
observe it carefully. (verse 34)

In thy law’s path make me to go;
for I delight therein.
My heart unto thy testimonies,
and not to greed, incline. (verse 35-36)

Turn thou away my sight and eyes
from viewing vanity;
And in thy good and holy way
be pleas’d to quicken me. (verse 37)

Confirm to me thy gracious word,
which I did gladly hear,
Ev’n to thy servant, Lord, who is
devoted to thy fear. (verse 38)

Turn thou away my fear’d reproach;
for good thy judgments be.
Lo, for thy precepts I have long’d;
in thy truth quicken me. (verse 39-40)

Do you hunger and thirst for God’s Word?

Ask God to teach you His Word and give you understanding of His Word and how to apply it in your life.
